Rethinking the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict:

Implications of the Apartheid Lens

Venue: Auditorium A1B, Maison de la paix, Chemin Eugène-Rigot 2, 1202

virginia tilleyIn a study issued by the United Nation’s Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in 2017, speaker Virginia Tilley and her co-author Richard Falk presented evidence that Israel is imposing an apartheid regime on the Palestinian people. In this talk on her continuing research, Prof. Tilley argues that recognizing the conflict as a crime of apartheid illuminates the inherent instability and legal inadmissibility of partition (two states) as a solution and that reunification (one state in all of Mandate Palestine) is the only solution consistent with international law and the inseparable goals of universal human rights, a just and stable peace and international peace and security.

Virginia Tilley (MA in Contemporary Arab Studies, MA and PhD in Political Science) has studied the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for over thirty years, as part of her work on the comparative politics of ethnic conflict. In addition to numerous papers and essays, she is author of The One-State Solution: A Breakthrough for Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (2005); editor and co-author of Beyond Occupation: Apartheid, Colonialism and International Law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (2012).

Robert Roth, Director of the Geneva Academy and Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva, will comment on the report. The event will be moderated by Riccardo Bocco, Professor of Political Sociology at the Graduate Institute and CCDP Faculty Associate.
